Film Review Script

Hello, to all cinema fans, I’m your host Benjamin Novoa.

Today we’ll be reviewing the contemporary cult classic Memento. Writer/director Christopher Nolan weaves a nifty narrative revolving around Leonard. The story is told backwards in clever 5-10 segments placed in reverse chronological order, which means the viewer's mind is just as challenged as Leonard’s . The movies “end” is revealed within the opening minutes. Rather than take away from the film, this unique take on story telling allows audiences to experience Leonards’ dilemma

Following an attack in which his wife has been killed, Leonard Shelby suffesr from anterograde amnesia (a memory disorder that is characterized by an inability to secure new long term Memories)-even events occurring seconds earlier can be lost to him. Having lost his anchor in time, Leonard, played wonderfully by Guy Pierce, begins an investigation to satisfy his desire for revenge.

Every new scene is a countdown to just how much information can be recorded before Leanord's next inevitable memory lapse. You find yourself asking the same questions as Leonard. How did he get there, what is he doing, who is this person, and what is going on? Leaving audiences eagerly anticipating the answers to these questions.

However the movie isn’t without a dark sense of humor poking at Leonard’s situation without being cruel about it. Anticipating problems, Leonard is forced to rely on polaroids of new acquaintances and tattoos on his body as reminders to provide important information. There is nothing like being on the phone and then reading a body tattoo warning to yourself “not to pick up the phone.”

The supporting cast is equally as engaging, matching pearces performance and complimenting the story with characters that are not always what they seem to be. Natalie, played by Carrie Ann Moss, initially seems to have Leonard’s best interests at heart, but her real motives beneath this facade are anything but. Teddy, who claims to be Leonard’s best friend is played by Joe Pantoliano. He tells Leonard what has really been happening since the beginning of his quest, but whether or not he’s honest or manipulative remains to be seen.

Director Christopher Nolan has made a memorable film in Memento, the thought that we are “the sum of our memories” willlinger after viewing this film. Wonderful cinematography, a thought provoking story, and an exhilarating pace make memento a must see for any movie goer.
